Frenectomy in Children: When and Why Is It Necessary?

Frenectomy is a common dental procedure, especially in children. This procedure involves the partial or complete removal of small tissues in the mouth called frenulum, which connects the lips or under the tongue to the gums. Frenectomy is often necessary for frenulum anomalies that adversely affect speech, eating or dental health.

Why is Frenectomy Needed?

  1. Speech Problems: In some children, an excessively short sublingual frenulum can restrict the mobility of the tongue, which can cause speech difficulties. This condition is known as “tongue tie” and can be treated with frenectomy.
  2. Feeding Difficulties: Especially in infants, a short tongue tie can lead to sucking difficulties. This may cause the child not to be sufficiently nourished and to have problems in development.
  3. Tooth Structure and Developmental Problems: If the frenulum of the upper lip is excessively large, gaps between the teeth (diastema) can be observed. In addition, this may lead to gum recession and other periodontal problems.

How is Frenectomy Performed?

The frenectomy procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic, surgically or using increasingly popular laser technology. Laser frenectomy offers a more comfortable treatment, minimising bleeding, pain and recovery time.

Post Frenectomy Care

After a frenectomy, children usually experience a rapid recovery. However, it is important to follow the following care recommendations to reduce the risk of infection and promote healing:

  1. It is recommended to pay attention to oral hygiene and rinse the mouth with water regularly.
  2. In case of pain or discomfort during the healing process, the child can be supported with painkillers.
  3. The child should be encouraged to consume soft foods for the first few days after the procedure.

Conclusion

Frenectomy is an effective intervention to prevent speech, feeding or dental health problems in children. If your child is experiencing such a problem, it would be the best step to consult a paediatric dentist or a specialist dentist.
